Fees

Permit

BDS $25.00 import permit application fee. Item 9(a) of the conditions: "Import permit application fee: $25.00".confidence: Inferred. Backed by an official source but not yet certified by a human reviewer.[1]

Veterinary

BDS $60.00 landing certificate fee, per animal. Item 9(b): "Landing certificate fee (per animal): $60.00" — the per-animal qualifier is the document's own.confidence: Inferred. Backed by an official source but not yet certified by a human reviewer.[1]

After hours

BDS $150.00-$300.00. Item 9(c): "Overtime fees payable to the inspector: $150.00 - $300.00 depending on the day and time of arrival/inspection". Item 7 sets when it bites: animals landed outside Government working hours, 8.15 a.m. to 4.30 p.m. Monday to Friday, and on weekends and Bank Holidays.confidence: Inferred. Backed by an official source but not yet certified by a human reviewer.[1]

THE DOCUMENT PRINTS BARE DOLLAR SIGNS. Item 9 gives "$25.00", "$60.00" and "$150.00 - $300.00" with no currency code anywhere in the list. They are read as Barbados dollars because the fees are levied by Barbadian Veterinary Services under Barbadian instruments, but that is a reading, not the document's word, and at roughly two Barbados dollars to the US dollar the difference is material. No conversion is offered here.[1]

Customs duties are separate and additional. Item 7 opens "In addition to Customs duties, Barbados legislation allows for the collection of various fees on the importation of dogs and cats", and item 5 has a Customs Officer applying "the relevant duties (as all live animals entering Barbados are recognised as cargo)". None of the figures above includes duty, and the document does not say what duty comes to.[1]

The charging instruments are named in item 8 — the Agricultural, Diagnostic and Other Services (Fees) Order, 2008 and the Animals (Diseases and Importation Control) (Amendment) Regulations, 2014 — and the edition of the conditions read here is footer-dated 2018/11/06. Neither instrument was read directly, and both are over a decade old; confirm the current amounts with Veterinary Services before budgeting.[1]

On arrival & aboard

Advance notice
At least three (3) working days' notice of the expected date and time of arrival must be given to Veterinary Services, together with the owner or agent's Barbados address and contact information, the customs broker's details, the date and time of arrival, and "Airline and Flight number or vessel name." Failure to give notice "will result in significant delays in getting your pet once it arrives."confidence: Inferred. Backed by an official source but not yet certified by a human reviewer.[1]
Veterinary inspection
On arrivalconfidence: Inferred. Backed by an official source but not yet certified by a human reviewer.[1]
Customs inspection
On arrivalconfidence: Inferred. Backed by an official source but not yet certified by a human reviewer.[1]
Out of hours
Animals landed outside government working hours (8:15am-4:30pm Monday to Friday) or on weekends and Bank Holidays are subject to overtime inspection fees.confidence: Inferred. Backed by an official source but not yet certified by a human reviewer.[1]
At the dock
The document names yachts explicitly in its Category definitions and accepts "vessel name" in place of a flight number for advance notice, so sea arrival is clearly anticipated in principle. But the described post-arrival mechanics — an "Animal Reception Centre" that pets are taken to directly from the aircraft, and handover to "aircraft handling agents" — are written for air arrivals only. Nothing describes where or how a yacht presents an animal for the required veterinary and customs inspection. All live animals are treated as cargo for customs purposes, and the document recommends employing a customs broker to clear them.

Quarantine

Quarantine
Not yet documentedconfidence: Unknown. Not located in any source yet.
If your papers are not in order

The Ministry document never mentions a quarantine facility or holding period. It states instead that "failure to satisfy all of the health conditions laid out in the health requirements will result in your pet being refused entry into Barbados" — refusal, not quarantine, is the stated consequence of non-compliance. Absence of a quarantine mention is not confirmation that none exists in practice; confirm with Veterinary Services before relying on this.confidence: Unknown. Not located in any source yet.[1]

Open questions

High priority

  1. HIGH PRIORITY — confirm this against a copy hosted on agriculture.gov.bb itself. Every direct attempt this session to reach the ministry's own "Bringing Animals into Barbados" and "Transiting Animals through Barbados" pages returned 404, so the primary source here is a third-party mirror (anivetvoyage.com). The letterhead, contact details and legal citations all match what independent search results report as current, and the live 2026 online application form corroborates the 3-working-day notice requirement — but provenance would be stronger with a ministry-hosted copy.

Also open

  1. The PDF is footer-dated 2018/11/06. The live application form uses a different contact address (animalimports-transits@agriculture.gov.bb) than the PDF (vetservices@agriculture.gov.bb), which suggests some updating since 2018. Obtain the current version and confirm nothing material — fees, waiting periods, the Category 1 list — has changed.
  2. No quarantine period is mentioned anywhere in the document; the stated consequence of non-compliance is refusal of entry, not quarantine. Confirm directly with Veterinary Services whether any holding period applies in practice, since it is the requirement most likely to upend a cruising plan if undocumented.
  3. Search results reference a separate "Transiting Animals through Barbados" page stating a maximum 24-hour transfer window for dogs, cats and pet birds — potentially very relevant to a yacht in transit rather than importing. This session could not fetch that page directly (404 on every URL tried), so nothing from it is recorded here. Follow up and source it properly before assuming a 24-hour rule applies.
  4. The live application form's second section includes the line "Please note that declarations must be received at least twenty-one (21) days prior to the event" in a context that also covers breeding, working and service animals. It is unclear whether "the event" means the general import/arrival or is boilerplate inherited from a different permit type on the same form system. Not recorded as a fact here pending clarification — if it does apply to ordinary pet imports it would materially conflict with, or supplement, the 3-working-day notice figure from the 2018 PDF.
  5. No breed restrictions, maximum animal count, or age minimum tied specifically to import (as opposed to the general 3-month vaccination age noted above) appear anywhere in the document. Treat their absence as a gap in the source, not as confirmation there are none.
  6. Nothing in the document addresses an animal that stays aboard and never lands, so no transit section is authored here despite Barbados being a common landfall/provisioning stop.

What it costs

BDS $25.00, from the schedule in the Veterinary Services conditions: "Under these regulations, fees levied by the Veterinary Services are: a. Import permit application fee: $25.00". The same schedule charges BDS $60.00 per animal for the landing certificate and BDS $150.00–$300.00 in inspector overtime, so the permit is the smallest of the three — see the fees section.confidence: Inferred. Vaccination
Requiredconfidence: Inferred. Backed by an official source but not yet certified by a human reviewer.[1]
Min. age at vaccination
90 days (General vaccination guidance, not category-specific: "The vaccination should have been carried out when the animal was at least three (3) months old.")confidence: Inferred. Backed by an official source but not yet certified by a human reviewer.[1]
Min. before travel
35 days (Category 1 (rabies-free) origins only: thirty-five (35) days must pass after the rabies vaccination before the pets are eligible to enter. This does NOT apply to a yacht — arrival by sea places every animal in Category 2 regardless of origin. See rabies_titer for the wait that actually governs a cruising boat.)confidence: Inferred. Backed by an official source but not yet certified by a human reviewer.[1]
Boosters, and what the certificate must show

Only inactivated virus vaccines manufactured to OIE Terrestrial Animal Manual recommendations should be used. The microchip must be implanted before or at the time of vaccination. Vaccine validity follows the manufacturer's recommendation rather than a fixed one- or three-year rule.confidence: Inferred. Backed by an official source but not yet certified by a human reviewer.[1]

Rabies titer test

A blood test that measures rabies antibodies, to show the vaccination actually took. The sample has to be drawn a set time after the jab, and some places then make you wait months more before the animal may land — so this is the requirement most worth checking before you plan a route, not after.

Blood titer
Requiredconfidence: AI-vetted. An AI read the cited document and quoted the text it found; where the wording differed from ours, an AI judged the two equivalent. Not yet checked by a human — read the quote.[1]
Evidence for Blood titer
7. Animals being imported from a Category 2 country or those arriving by sea, irrespective of the country of origin, must be tested for rabies antibodies at an approved laboratory and must show an acceptable titre result.
Test after vaccination
30 days (The sample cannot be drawn until at least 30 days after the rabies vaccination. This runs BEFORE the ninety-day wait below, not instead of it, so the two in sequence put the earliest possible arrival roughly 120 days after the vaccination.)confidence: Inferred. Backed by an official source but not yet certified by a human reviewer.[1]
Wait after test
90 days ("Ninety (90) days must pass after the successful blood sample was taken before the pets are eligible to enter Barbados." Because the sample itself cannot be drawn until at least 30 days post-vaccination, the earliest a pet can realistically arrive is roughly 120 days after rabies vaccination. This applies to every animal arriving by sea, including yachts, "irrespective of the country of origin.")confidence: AI-vetted. Evidence for Wait after test
4. ninety (90) days must pass after the successful blood sample was taken before the pets are eligible to enter Barbados
Required level
A Fluorescent Antibody Virus Neutralisation (FAVN) rabies antibody titre of at least 0.5 IU/ml, from a blood sample taken a minimum of thirty (30) days after the rabies vaccination, tested at an approved laboratory. A failed result (below 0.5 IU/ml) requires revaccination and retesting.confidence: AI-vetted. Arriving by sea

The export health certificate is normally valid for 10 days from the date of issue by the Official Veterinarian, but "in the case of animals travelling by sea, validity can be extended for the period of the voyage." That is the only relief a passage earns. In every other respect arriving by sea is the STRICTER route: it places the animal in Category 2 "irrespective of the country of origin", so a yacht from a rabies-free island still needs the titer and its wait — see rabies titer.confidence: AI-vetted. An AI read the cited document and quoted the text it found; where the wording differed from ours, an AI judged the two equivalent. Not yet checked by a human — read the quote.[1]

What the certificate must say

All dogs and cats entering Barbados must be accompanied by an Official Export Health Certificate endorsed (signed and stamped) by the Official Veterinary Services of the country of origin. The certificate must be in English, however where appropriate it may also include the language understood by the certifying veterinarian. EU Pet Passports are explicitly not accepted as a substitute.confidence: Inferred. Backed by an official source but not yet certified by a human reviewer.[1]

Parasite treatment

Internal

Dogs only: treated for tapeworms with an anthelmintic containing praziquantel within seven (7) days of export.confidence: Inferred. Backed by an official source but not yet certified by a human reviewer.[1]

External

Dogs only: treated for ticks with a formulation approved for that purpose within seven (7) days of export.confidence: Inferred. Backed by an official source but not yet certified by a human reviewer.[1]

Timing

The model export certificate's anti-parasite section (tick and tapeworm treatment) is headed "dogs only" — the document does not require an equivalent treatment for cats.[1]

Evidence for Microchip
The import health requirements will differ depending on the category of country; however irrespective of the country of origin and its rabies status, all dogs and cats entering Barbados must be permanently identified with a microchip (ISO Standard 11784 or Annex A to standard 11785)

Note
THE CATEGORY RULE: Category 1 is defined as countries/territories that are rabies-free or low-risk; Category 2 is everywhere else, AND "animals travelling by sea (e.g. on yachts, cruise ships and cargo vessels) also fall into this category" regardless of country of origin. The document's own Category 1 list (eligibility requires 3 months' continuous prior residency, which is moot for a yacht per the sea-arrival rule above): Andorra, Anguilla, Antigua & Barbuda, Aruba, Ascension Island, Australia, Bahamas, Barbados, Bermuda, BES Islands (Bonaire, St Eustatius & Saba), British Virgin Islands, Canada, Cayman Islands, Channel Islands, Curacao, Dominica, European Union Member Countries, Falkland Islands, Faroe Islands, Fiji, French Polynesia, Greenland, Guam, Guadeloupe, Hawaii, Hong Kong, Iceland, Israel, Jamaica, Japan, Liechtenstein, Martinique, Mauritius, Mexico, Monaco, Montserrat, New Caledonia, New Zealand, Republic of Ireland, Russian Federation, St Helena, St Kitts & Nevis, St Lucia, St Maarten/St Martin, St Pierre & Miquelon, St Vincent & The Grenadines, San Marino, Singapore, Switzerland, Taiwan, Trinidad & Tobago, Turks & Caicos Islands, United Arab Emirates, United Kingdom, United States of America, US Virgin Islands, Vanuatu, Vatican City State, Wallis & Futuna. Category 2 is all other countries and territories, plus (per the explicit note) any pet resident in a Category 1 country for less than 3 months and any pet travelling by sea. A yacht satisfies the sea-arrival trigger on its own.
Dogs
  • Tested negative for heartworm (Dirofilaria immitis), leishmaniasis and/or nipah virus where the country of origin is endemic for them. Heartworm test by ELISA antigen test within 30 days of export (not applicable to dogs under 6 months); leishmaniasis by IFAT or ELISA within 6 months of export; nipah virus by ELISA within 14 days of export, and the animal must originate from a region free of nipah virus. Hendra virus is NOT a dog test: the document's detailed protocol marks it "(cats only)", although its summary lists of Category 1 and Category 2 requirements name hendra among the diseases "the pets" must be tested for.confidence: Inferred. Backed by an official source but not yet certified by a human reviewer.[1]
Cats
  • Tested negative for leishmaniasis, hendra virus and/or nipah virus where the country of origin is endemic for them. Leishmaniasis by IFAT or ELISA within 6 months of export; hendra virus by ELISA within 7 days of export, a test the document restricts to cats; nipah virus by ELISA within 14 days of export, and the animal must originate from a region free of nipah virus. Heartworm testing is stated as not applicable to cats.confidence: Inferred. Backed by an official source but not yet certified by a human reviewer.[1]
