On arrival & aboard

Advance notice
Notify the Veterinary Officer, Quarantine, Veterinary Services at least 48 hours (the APHIS mirror of these requirements says "two working days") before the scheduled time of arrival. The Ministry's own guidelines give (868) 642-0063 or (868) 642-0064; the APHIS mirror gives (868) 693-2910 and nadcaph2013@gmail.com. Both are cited below; which is current was not confirmed.confidence: Conflicting. Sources disagree — verify before you rely on it.[14]
At the dock
As of August 17, 2022, dogs and cats may be imported via aircraft cabin, checked baggage or cargo — a Ministry media release states this removed a prior condition that pets could only travel as cargo. Every source read for this file discusses air travel exclusively. Nothing describes how an animal arriving by private yacht clears in, which is the case this site exists for — see verification.outstanding_questions.

Quarantine

Quarantine
None requiredconfidence: AI-vetted. An AI read the cited document and quoted the text it found; where the wording differed from ours, an AI judged the two equivalent. Not yet checked by a human — read the quote.[1]
Evidence for Quarantine
importation of dogs and cats without quarantine.
Duration
180 days (Not a routine requirement. "With effect from April 2013, Trinidad and Tobago implemented a system that allows the importation of dogs and cats without quarantine" for animals that meet the entry requirements. This duration applies only as a consequence for an animal that does NOT meet the import permit's requirements on arrival, per the application form: full quarantine for not less than six (6) months, OR quarantine until specific requirements are met, OR re-export at the owner's expense, OR destruction — as determined by the inspector.)confidence: Inferred. Backed by an official source but not yet certified by a human reviewer.[21]
If your papers are not in order

No quarantine for animals that fully meet the import permit's conditions on arrival. Non-compliant animals are subject to the outcomes described above, at the Inspector's discretion.confidence: Inferred. Backed by an official source but not yet certified by a human reviewer.[12]

Open questions

  1. HIGHEST PRIORITY — Grenada is not on either the Category 1 or Category 2 list in the Ministry's own guidelines, which means a boat routing from Grenada to Trinidad (a very common end-of-season move on this site's route) falls into Category 3: a rabies titer is required AND the import permit must be applied for at least five months in advance, not the 1.5 months and no-titre treatment that applies from most of the Leeward and Windward chain. Confirm this directly with the Chief Veterinary Officer — getting this wrong could mean arriving in Trinidad without a valid permit.
  2. The Category 1 entry checklist does not ask whether the animal has a current rabies vaccination, unlike the Category 2 and 3 checklists. Confirm whether this is a genuine exemption or a gap in the source document before assuming a Category 1 arrival can skip rabies vaccination entirely.
  3. Brucella canis testing for intact dogs appears in the USDA APHIS mirror of these requirements and in two commercial sources, but not in the Ministry's own guidelines or application form. Confirm whether it currently applies, and whether neutered dogs are exempt — no source states either way.
  4. No source read for this file states a permit fee. A commonly repeated figure of roughly TT$10 could not be traced to any page that was actually readable (BringFido, Expat Focus, and a trinituner.com forum thread all returned HTTP 403 to every retrieval method tried). Confirm the current fee with the Chief Veterinary Officer.
  5. Every source located discusses air travel exclusively — the August 2022 update is specifically about aircraft cabin/checked-baggage/cargo options. Nothing describes how an animal arriving by private yacht clears in, which port(s) accept yacht arrivals with animals aboard, or whether the same permit and category system applies unchanged. This is the case this site exists for and it is entirely unconfirmed for Trinidad and Tobago.
  6. Two different phone numbers are given for the required 48-hour/2-working-day arrival notification across sources of similar vintage — (868) 642-0063 / 642-0064 in the Ministry's own guidelines, versus (868) 693-2910 in the USDA APHIS mirror. Confirm which is current before relying on either.
  7. No numeric rabies titer threshold is published — sources say only that the test "must show a protective titre." Confirm the actual IU/mL threshold used, since other jurisdictions on this route state theirs explicitly (e.g. 0.5 IU/mL).
  8. Nothing addresses an animal that stays aboard and never lands, so no transit section is authored here.

Import permit

Permit
Requiredconfidence: AI-vetted. An AI read the cited document and quoted the text it found; where the wording differed from ours, an AI judged the two equivalent. Not yet checked by a human — read the quote.[12]
Evidence for Permit
Ensure that you have an import permit before entering Trinidad.
Apply ahead
45 days (At least one and a half (1½) months in advance of planned travel for Category 1 and Category 2 countries. For Category 3 countries (everywhere not on the Category 1 or 2 lists, including Grenada) the application must be submitted at least FIVE (5) months in advance of travel, measured from the rabies vaccination date.)confidence: Inferred. Backed by an official source but not yet certified by a human reviewer.[13]
What it costs

Not stated in any source read for this file — not in the Ministry's own guidelines, the application form, or the two commercial sites fetched (PetTravel.com, The Caribbean Pet). A web search surfaced a commonly repeated figure of TT$10, but every page that figure could plausibly come from either did not mention it when actually fetched (PetTravel.com, The Caribbean Pet) or returned HTTP 403 to every retrieval method tried (BringFido, Expat Focus, a trinituner.com forum thread). Per this project's sourcing rule, an unverified search-result figure is not recorded as a value — see verification.outstanding_questions.confidence: Inferred. Rabies

Vaccination
Requiredconfidence: Inferred. Backed by an official source but not yet certified by a human reviewer.[1]
Boosters, and what the certificate must show

NOTABLE GAP: the Category 1 entry checklist in the Ministry's own document does not ask whether the animal is vaccinated against rabies at all — only the Category 2 and Category 3 checklists do. It is unclear whether this is a genuine exemption for Category 1 arrivals or an omission in the source document; a health certificate would ordinarily record vaccination status regardless. For Category 2 and 3, the rabies vaccination must be administered AFTER the animal is microchipped and per the vaccine manufacturer's data sheet. No minimum age at vaccination or maximum vaccine age is stated by any source read for this file.confidence: Inferred. Backed by an official source but not yet certified by a human reviewer.[1]

Rabies titer test

A blood test that measures rabies antibodies, to show the vaccination actually took. The sample has to be drawn a set time after the jab, and some places then make you wait months more before the animal may land — so this is the requirement most worth checking before you plan a route, not after.

Blood titer
Requiredconfidence: AI-vetted. An AI read the cited document and quoted the text it found; where the wording differed from ours, an AI judged the two equivalent. Not yet checked by a human — read the quote.[1]
Evidence for Blood titer
Category 3: All other countries. Rabies vaccination and titre are required
Test after vaccination
30 days (Rabies blood test (FAVN or RFFT) done at an approved laboratory at least one (1) month after vaccination. Original laboratory results must be sent directly to the Animal Production and Health Division. For Category 3 countries, the import permit application additionally cannot be submitted until at least five calendar months from the vaccination date have passed.)confidence: Inferred. Backed by an official source but not yet certified by a human reviewer.[1]
Required level
No numeric titer value is published in any source read for this file — the guidelines state only that "the test must show a protective titre." Not required at all for animals arriving from Category 1 countries (see the header note for the current list, which does NOT include Grenada).confidence: AI-vetted. An AI read the cited document and quoted the text it found; where the wording differed from ours, an AI judged the two equivalent. Not yet checked by a human — read the quote.[1]
Evidence for Required level
The test must show a protective titre.

Veterinary health certificate

Certificate
Requiredconfidence: Inferred. Backed by an official source but not yet certified by a human reviewer.[1]
Completed within
7 days (Dated within seven (7) days of the travel date.)confidence: Inferred. Backed by an official source but not yet certified by a human reviewer.[1]
Gov. endorsement
Requiredconfidence: Secondary. From a non-government source; treat as a lead, not gospel.[6]
What the certificate must say

Do you have a valid official Health certificate (dated within 7 days of the travel date) from the exporting country detailing all the requirements?confidence: Inferred. Backed by an official source but not yet certified by a human reviewer.[1]

Parasite treatment

Internal

Required within ten (10) days of travel.confidence: Inferred. Backed by an official source but not yet certified by a human reviewer.[1]

External

Required within ten (10) days of travel.confidence: Inferred. Backed by an official source but not yet certified by a human reviewer.[1]

Timing

Within ten (10) days of travel, for both internal and external parasites.confidence: Inferred. Backed by an official source but not yet certified by a human reviewer.[1]

The guidelines also ask generally whether "any additional required tests/treatments" were conducted, without listing what those are for Category 1 or 2. For Category 3, the guidelines specify: for cats, up to two (2) additional tests may be required depending on the exporting country; for dogs, up to five or six additional tests may be required depending on the exporting country. None of these additional tests are named.[1]

The requirement is put as a question the traveller must be able to answer yes to — "Did you treat your pet for parasites (internal and external) within 10 days of travel?" — and it is repeated verbatim in all three country categories, so nothing about the origin country changes it. The APHIS mirror of these requirements states the treatment but drops the window, saying only that animals "must be treated for internal and external parasites prior to export"; the ten days come from the Ministry's own document.[14]

Identification

Microchip
Requiredconfidence: Inferred. Backed by an official source but not yet certified by a human reviewer.[1]
Standard
ISO standard accepted by the International Standards Organization. The application form (a different edition than the main guidelines document) additionally names TROVAN, AVID or HOMEAGAIN microchips specifically.confidence: Inferred. Backed by an official source but not yet certified by a human reviewer.[12]
Chip before rabies
The chip must be implanted before the rabies vaccinationconfidence: Inferred. Backed by an official source but not yet certified by a human reviewer.[1]

For Category 2 and 3 animals, the rabies vaccination must be administered AFTER the microchip is implanted; the guidelines ask explicitly whether this order was followed.[1]

Other health requirements

Note
See the dogs entry above on Brucella canis — the clearest example in this file of a requirement that appears in secondary and APHIS sources but not in the primary Trinidad and Tobago document.
Dogs
  • Intact (unneutered) dogs must test negative for Brucella canis. This is the USDA APHIS transcription of Trinidad and Tobago's requirements for U.S. exporters — "Intact dogs must be tested negative for Brucella canis" — and it does NOT appear anywhere in the Ministry's own guidelines document or application form, which is otherwise the most complete and current source available. Two commercial pet-travel sites state the test without the "intact" limit: PetTravel.com says "Dogs must also be tested for Brucella canis" and The Caribbean Pet says "Animals must be tested negative for Brucella canis". So whether a neutered dog is exempt is exactly what the sources disagree about; confirm it with the Chief Veterinary Officer rather than reading the APHIS wording as an exemption.confidence: Inferred. Backed by an official source but not yet certified by a human reviewer.[456]
